For centuries – long before the industrial revolution – the Scottish have used the wool from their hardy sheep to hand weave and dye a uniquely durable cloth: Tweed. Tweed is usually made by a variation of the basic twill weave, and the old Scottish name for twill was tweel. The name tweed is attributed to a mistake on the part of a London clerk who in 1826, when drafting an order or invoice for tweels, accidentally wrote tweeds, a name that quickly established itself.

The good news: Tweed remains virtually indestructible, waterproof, dense and warm.

The bad news: it’s often heavy, stiff and scratchy.

We eliminated the bad news by searching for and sourcing an updated Tweed that keeps the good properties, while adding suppleness and a wearable weight. Heavy Tweed is too warm for wearing indoors. But used in a topcoat: GENIUS! Our coat, which we’ve dubbed, The Highlander, is windproof, toasty and comfortable. We cut The Highlander topcoat with a trim silhouette that allows just enough room for a blazer or a sweater (not that you’ll need one). Then, we broadened the collar slightly so that you can turn it up against a gale and pair it with a scarf. Finally, we added elbow patches, since these are the only spots you might ever wear out on this topcoat.

It’s one damn fine coat for wearing to work or into the highlands when you’re searching out the best single malt.
